Prismatic Star -

Fabric Requirements:

Star Fabric: 48 2½”-strips of at least 8 different fabrics are required for this quilt.

  • Option 1:  Purchase 1 pack of Judy Niemeyer Hoffman Bali Pop 2½” strips. Each strip pack contains 48 strips of 48 different color-coordinated fabrics presorted into 6  strip sets of 8 fabrics each.
  • Option 2:  Purchase 2 regular strip packs. These packs usually contain 40 or fewer strips so you’ll need 2 packs to have the required 48 strips.
  •  Option 3:  Cut your own strips
  1. You will need 8, 24 or 48 different fabrics varying in value from light to very dark.  (The color of these fabrics can be different but the colors and patterns should blend with each other.)
  2.  If using 8 fabrics – cut  6 2½”-strips from each
  3. If using 24 fabrics – cut 2 2½”-strips from  each
  4.  If using 48 fabrics – cut 1 2½”-strip from each
  • Accent Fabric:  1 1/8 yards for the sashing strips that surround each of the star blocks.  The pattern shows this as black to outline the blocks.  An alternative is to use the same fabric as the background..  This allows the star blocks to float on top of the quilt.
  •   Background Fabric:  2 yards
  • Backing and Binding:  4½ yards

Bring any extra fabric and left-over strips to class in case we decide a substitution is required.

Note1:  I recommend using batik fabrics as they are more tightly woven and are more resistant to stretching and fraying.  There are lots of bias cuts in this quilt which are subject to distortion during construction.

Note 2:  You may want to wait until you finish the diamond block construction before purchasing the accent & background fabrics.  That way you can audition these fabrics with the completed blocks.

Tools & Supplies:

  • Sewing Machine with ¼” foot
  •  “Purple Thang”:  This is a plastic tool to help manage sewing over the thick seam intersections.  (A wooden skewer will also work.)
  •   Add-a-Quarter ruler:   An 18” is recommended, but I had no problems using a 12”.
  • Wash-out fabric glue pen  (Note:  I didn’t find this necessary)
  • Fabric glue stick
  • Scotch tape
  • Size 70 sewing needles
  • 6”x24” ruler
  • Flat-head flower pins
  • Heat-Proof Template Plastic:  3½” x 18”.
  • 8 large zip lock storage bags labeled #1 to #8
  • Rotary cutter with a new blade
  • Large cutting mat

There is "homework" before class and you will be given that information when you register for the class.
