Free Class - Paths & Stiles Quilt -

Sew E-Z is offering a "Free Class" periodically throughout 2017.  Our second one will be different from other quilt classes.  You will make 12 blocks - all the same.  Bring to class and you will swap with others giving you a total of 12 different blocks.  In class you will add your sashing and borders to complete your quilt top.

Supplies

  • sewing machine with a new needle
  • rotary cutter and ruler
  • straight pins
  • neutral color thread

Fabric Requirements

  • 2 yards white or white on white for background
  • 2 yards of one print - batik fabrics only - please respect this request - use only batiks for your second fabric

Cutting Instructions

 White Fabric

  • Cut 24 strips 2" x 18"
  • Cut 24 squares - 4 7/8" x 4 7/8"

Batik Fabric

  • Cut 12 strips 2'x 18"
  • Cut 24 squares - 4 7/8" x 4 7/8"
  • Cut 12 squuares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" 

Instructions for Making the Block

  • Take one 2" white strip and sew to one 2" batik strip - press seam towards batik
  • Sew another 2" white strip to the strip set you just sewed - press seam towards batik
  • Take one 4 7/8" batik square and one 4 7/8" white square and lay right sides together.  Draw a line diagonally on the white square and them make 1/4" line on each side of the diagonal line
  • Sew on the 1/4" line on each side and then cut on the diagonal line
  • Press open with seam towards batik - you have should have a 4 1/2" half square triangle.
  • Make 4 of these half square triangles.
  • Sew one half square triangle to one of the white/batik/white strip set with the batik in the lower right corner and the stripes going vertically.
  • Add another half square triangle to the other side of the strip set with the batik in the lower left corner.
  • Sew one strip set (horizontally) to the 4 1/2" square and then add the another strip set to the other side of the 4 1/2" square.
  • Sew one half square triangle to the last strip set with the batik in the upper right hand corner and then add the last half square triangle to the other side of the strip set, with the batik in the upper left hand corner.
  • Sew all 3 rows together with the row that has the 4 1/2" square as the center row.
  • Press all seams
  • Square should finish out 12 1/2" square.
